Magic is when a lot of people all believe in the same thing at the same time, and somehow we all escape ourselves a little bit and we meet up somewhere, and just a moment, we taste the sublime. Before cracking it open, LeRoy inhaled its papery scent, then reverently brushed the palm of his hand across the stamped green cloth. The segments where Maud forces herself onto the Wizard of Oz studio set may seem a bit more dubious, but the author manages to juxtapose the magical quality of the picture with the darker realities of Judy Garland’s life as a young actress at the mercy of a monstrous stage mother, sexual harassment, and the pressure to stay thin and childlike.

Not only was it a bit depressing, it was also slow moving at times, and I felt some segments could have been shortened. She hoped that her expression reflected a resoluteness of spirit, rather than the trepidation she was now feeling as this important meeting was at last upon her. On the following day (July 8), it became the highest-grossing film of the year in the United States and Canada. Hank, who fears being released back into the ocean, agrees to help her find her parents in exchange for her tag.
From capturing the pioneering spirit of a family settling out West to the fight for women’s suffrage, and the vulnerability of a young Judy Garland on the threshold of stardom, Finding Dorothy is filled with pitch-perfect wonderment. Letts takes readers on an unflinching journey between hardship and hope, with a catch-your-breath ending. Directed by Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Angus MacLane, produced by Lindsey Collins, and written by Stanton and Victoria Strouse, the film is a sequel/spin-off [a] to Finding Nemo (2003).
I really enjoyed these little references, and moments where aspects of the story of Oz appeared, as we get a glimpse of the story beginning to form in Baum’s mind, from the origin of the tin man, to a recognisable choice of fabric for a dress. But after a moment, he straightened his tie, took the book from Maud, and held out his other hand in greeting. Finding Dorothy is a thoroughly enjoyable and richly imagined novel which gives the reader a little insight into the golden age of Hollywood as well as the moving story of a man who had a story to tell, and the woman who would help bring it to life decades after his death. Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as “historical” in the children’s library; for the time has come for a series of newer “wonder tales” in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. It isn’t too heavy on all things Oz, it is in no way a retelling, it is a behind the scenes telling – lets break that down a bit more.Daughter of famed suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage, she was totally unaware of what a woman’s “place” was in the world and got bullied in college for it. Disney planned to make a sequel to Finding Nemo since 2005, tasking its new studio Circle Seven Animation after disagreements with Pixar.
Gripping, fascinating, this is a novel for anyone who ever stared in awe as Oz came to life on screen, and wondered what other secrets lay hidden behind the curtain. Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal. Before Maud had a chance to finish, the elevator doors slid open again and a brown-haired man seemed to blow out as if pushed by a strong wind. One was a fascinating article about a pair of stolen ruby slippers used in The Wizard of Oz film, which was featured in the Washington Post. But what’s important to know when deciding whether to read it is: that it’s so wonderfully written, it beautifully depicts the challenges women faced at the time (the work of the suffragettes), the exploration of family ties, and following your heart, and most importantly, it speaks to your need to believe, to believe that dreams do come true. Written as fiction but based closely on the truth, Elizabeth Letts’s new book tells a story of love, loss, inspiration, and perseverance, set in America’s heartland. Disney's acquisition of Pixar in early 2006 led to the cancellation of Circle Seven's version of the film. Maud was astonished to see a giant young man—well over six feet tall—rubbing his head, then bending over to gather up a scattered pile of papers from the floor.
This is an entertaining read and I thoroughly enjoyed the insights of US history provided in Maud and Frank's story and that of the Hollywood movie business that Letts provides in the narrative.Gripping, fascinating, Finding Dorothy is a novel for anyone who ever stared in awe as Oz came to life onscreen, and wondered what other secrets lay hidden behind the curtain. To her credit, the author doesn’t flinch from describing the depravity of the SS in Auschwitz and the unimaginable suffering of their victims—no gauzy evasions here, as in Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
