Over the centuries that followed the Abbey was considerably expanded and altered and, in the process, the floor level was progressively lowered, which may be why the ghostly monk who is known to haunt Westminster Abbey, is reported as floating a little way off the ground. Others find this connection irrelevant due to the commonality of vigil stories (Westwood 2005: 410). Port Arthur began as a penal colony in 1833, housing British convicts until it was abandoned in 1877.Is it possible that the former choir mistresses love of carols continued beyond the grave, and that it was her ghost that had appeared in the church on that December night? Tourists are free to visit the abandoned site today, perhaps to confirm whether the many circulating ghost stories tied to Lawang Sewu have any truth to them.
