And it was wonderful not having to deal with archaic texts like the King James and Douay-Rheims when one simply wanted to do personal spiritual reading.

Just because Douay-Rheims is from the Vulgate it doesn’t necessarily mean its a better or perfect translation either. Remains faithful to the meaning of the original scriptures while avoiding traditional male bias of the English language. As a Roman Catholic Bible, it includes the deuterocanonical books along with the sixty-six others included in Protestant Bibles. I was originally assigned a large amount of text to translate, but after doing some necessary preliminary work I was obliged to resign owing to pressure of other work, and only completed 'Jonah', one of the shortest books.

It’s size and style (with dust jacket) makes a perfect Bible for a Catholic resource library, but not one for everyday use. The Bible simply stops at the end of the book of Revelation, with a couple of extra blank pages which I would use for notes. On his contribution to the Jerusalem Bible, Tolkien wrote, "Naming me among the 'principal collaborators' was an undeserved courtesy on the part of the editor of the Jerusalem Bible. I like the Jerusalem Bible translation, but this edition is honestly more of Bible for home study, for those who want to read and use a Catholic translation with a separate commentary.

The Jerusalem Bible was once the official translation of the Lectionary in Canada (now it is the NRSV-CE). The New Jerusalem Bible is an update to the Jerusalem Bible, an English version of the French Bible de Jérusalem. I spent some time comparing it with another Bible and found that this Jerusalem Bible seems to have been photocopied, scanned – something that I did not expect with a nice modern cover, so it is true when people say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. When the French version was updated in 1973, the changes were used to revise the Jerusalem Bible, creating the New Jerusalem Bible. So I always see this vague claim by modern catholic bible scholars to criticise the vulgate, but I have yet to see in depth proof of what the vulgate has wrong in its translation.
