After a poem introducing the author’s voice and relationship to love, she goes on to explain a dream she had in which Aphrodite visited her and asked, “What do you need? Blurb: Bestselling and award-winning author Trista Mateer takes an imaginative approach to self-care in this new poetry and prose collection, Aphrodite Made Me Do It . There is just something about Trista Mateer’s poetry, and art, that is very identifiable and comforting when you are feeling rubbish. Mateer’s poetry touches on feminism, mental health, assault, and the unfairness of having our stories rewritten for us. The poetry style was minimalistic and 'Tumblr-y' which fit the blandness of most of the collection, but made the Aphrodite part rawer.

Aphrodite Made Me Do It is a collection of prose-poetry, framed as a conversation between the author and Aphrodite, goddess of love, sex and beauty. In Troy they fought over Helen like children but Achilles mourned Patroclus the way a soul mourns a body. Trista Mateer erupts with spells of thunder and then gifts you with a careful platter of language to cast them yourself.

This worked really well for me, much better in fact than deliberately pointed poems about finding your inner strength when faced with heartache or only needing yourself all along anyway, all of which I find isolating. I appreciated how the different themes were dealt with and also the artwork that was included among the poems.

I think it's great that so many people can turn to writing to express their thoughts, heal from their pasts, and fight for social justices. She rails at the way that popular culture has represented her as a sexualised, unintellectual being. Also, some if not all the pictures and drawing - beautiful - have nothing to do with the poems they are associated with, it's disturbing and it makes the poetry book seem really cluttered, which is highly unpleasant. Featuring a vibrant rainbow design, and our super-sized Q logo, you won't find a more stylish way to make a statement. There are multiple images throughout which felt a little juvenile – they genuinely looked like images captured from google with clip art attached, or were images with poignant quotes on which you’d often see scrolling along your chosen social media platform. Men said she was the perfect vessel for evil to enter the world, but men are the ones who wrote the stories. The poetry itself - especially the parts about rewriting Aphrodite's story far away from the male gaze - was intriguing, but it didn't capture me for long.

I opened the book to “start” reading, and ended up reading the entire thing without putting it down. You will find grace between these pages and a little sadness, too--the kind that makes flowers grow in all of the places you need them most. Aphrodite Made Me Do It is a feminist poetry collection about love, loss, insecurity, pain, and empowerment. Among all these other things, it’s an incredible view on many infamous women of mythology, and it gives a voice to the sides of their stories that we all too often overlook. My pain has always deserved a voice and I will not deny it that, but I won’t devote my life to it either. She says there’s some dispute over the reason for our creation but that it definitely wasn’t to be gilded objects. I particularly enjoyed one of her poems about men writing stories and not capturing history in the way Aphrodite might have liked which left more to the imagination.

The long-awaited second instalment in Samantha Shannon's Sunday Times and New York Times-bestselling series Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory.

The million copy bestseller, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and. There was something so unique about this collection and I love that the author included her illustrations and art work. Unfortunately they do not have this one as a physical copy, so I'll just have to wait until I can get my own— which I will totally be doing because this book is definitely worth rereading again and again.
