He adapts to their way of life, learns to eat and sleep among them, and acquires a unique understanding of these extraordinary creatures. As he got older, he would disappear into the woods, drawn to the rhythms of animal life and away from the rules of a society he did not understand. Deer Man is a fascinating and spellbinding account of the ancient quest to reconnect with the natural world.

Charles Foster’s Being a Beast saw him live like a range of creatures, from otters and swifts, in a tragicomical rejoinder to the challenge thrown out by philosophers: “What is it like to be …” Such books are encounters, more than anything else, with sentience. Struggling under the weight of the human world's expectations, he left civilization behind at 19 to live among them for seven years. Reaching their vehicle, Heying and his companion were about to drive off when a Deer Man emerged from the shadows and began to lurch towards them.

A hybrid animal, Deer Man has the antlered head of a great stag, a human's torso, and legs described as similar to either those of a man or deer. There’s a dreamy moment halfway through Geoffroy Delorme’s brief, sensuous book in which one of the young deer he gets to know curls up beside him, its head resting on his leg. I was really fascinated with this true story of a young Frenchman from Normandy who lived in the woods for 7 years with deer.

Yet one suspects this is the only kind of testimony that could come from someone who has, in many ways, eschewed the human world.

One young buck is devastated when humans destroy his territory and he no longer has shelter or food or any chance of winning a mate.

Some of the photos, which are undoubtedly beautiful, seemed to be plonked into the book at random moments and not ones relating to the story itself. Alone in the forest with no tent, no shelter and not even a sleeping bag or blanket is an exercise in pure survival, and so Geoffroy follows the deer's behaviour closely. He spends a good portion of the book moralising about human misbehaviour and mistreatment of nature (which obviously isn’t totally incorrect), but that is somewhat undermined by the hypocrisy and total lack of nuance / painting all of humanity except himself with the poison apple brush. For nature enthusiasts, conservation activists, animal lovers, and fans of books like Hermit In The Woods, Woodswoman, Untamed, or the memoirs of Jane Goodall and Diana Fossey, I HIGHLY recommend this book! I avoid my parents, who disapprove of my new man-of-the-woods lifestyle and have no qualms about saying so.

We have provided contract management services for the Forestry Commission, Highland Council , Scottish Natural Heritage and Tillhill Economic Forestry alongside long term management commitments to many notable Highland Estates. While there we heard one ear-piercing screech or scream, almost a hunting screech of some sort that made my hair stand on end and gave me goose bumps even worse. Alone in the forest with no tent, no shelter and not even a sleeping bag or blanket is an exercise in pure survival, and so Geoffroy follows the deer’s behaviour closely. This is actually living full-time outdoors, as part of a group of roe deer in the forests of France.
