Guenther, I don’t know about you,” he says. “But after a few years, it could be the stress, it could be expectations to manage…it’s hard.”

Guenther Steiner–centric episodes are exercises in Sisyphean struggle, and season four’s Haas story line is no exception. Hang on, are we playing up to the cameras here?” Horner asks, before urging Wolff to “change your f****** car.” Putting such a high price on his head may have been Daniel’s way of telling Haas he had no interest in joining them, yet there remained a sense that money made his world go round.Steiner with then-Alfa Romeo lead Fred Vasseur and Pirelli F1 director Mario Isola in 2022. The series starts, hilariously, with Binotto driving his old chum Guenther Steiner to his vineyard in Trentino for a wine-tasting mate date. Later, in Episode 7, Netflix do what Netflix do by imagining a storyline that Sergio Perez was somehow fighting to save his seat heading into Monaco, when in reality his excellent start to the season had already made a contract extension a forgone conclusion. What sets this book apart from other F1 books is its unique format. Instead of the traditional biographies that we've seen before from technical directors and principals which span an entire career, Steiner chronicles the events and difficulties of the 2022 season. He shares the changes and challenges brought about by the lingering effects of the pandemic, as well as what it's like to be a team principal managing the impact of new FIA rules, the budget cap, and handling a Russian driver with Russian sponsors amidst the developing situation in Ukraine. Weaved in among Haas’s exploits are moments from Steiner’s life, such as how he got into motorsport in the first place, through rallying, before joining three-time F1 champion Niki Lauda at the Jaguar F1 team, plus his time in America before convincing Gene Haas to set up an F1 operation. There are some wonderful stories, from his experiences in the 1992 Dakar Rally, to he and Lauda being driven to a hotel in Japan by a man who “had an Olympic medal in foking about”. In Surviving to Drive, the Haas team principal takes readers inside his Formula 1 team for the entirety of the 2022 season, giving an unobstructed view of what really takes place behind the scenes. Through this unique lens, Guenther takes us on the thrilling rollercoaster of life at the heart of high stakes motor racing.

Before walking away, the reporter leans in for a quiet word in Ricciardo’s ear: “I told you not to trust Zak.” Otmar’s bitterness towards Aston Martin is laid bare From the day he left a race-winning Red Bull for a lucrative Renault contract in 2018, Daniel Ricciardo faced accusations that he had cashed in. I’m not an expert but I think this principle doesn’t sound completely wrong to me. They need to look at how close athletes actually are to the regime.” Written in Steiner’s voice the stylized ‘fok’ and ‘jeezos’ can become a little grating through the course of the year, but conversely it does add to the individualistic aura of the book and remind you this is Steiner and no one else.

Episode 5 is the point at which the great driver merry-go-round of 2022 is set in motion, with Sebastian Vettel’s retirement sparking the chain of events that would lead Fernando Alonso to Aston Martin and Oscar Piastri to McLaren. Guenther Steiner is one of motor racing's biggest and most celebrated characters, known to millions for his show-stealing appearances on Netflix's hugely popular fly on the wall series, Drive to Survive.

Prior to start of the race, Horner approaches Binotto on the starting grid to air his disappointment with Ferrari “for making accusations.”

Drive to Survive’s fourth season, which follows the ups and downs of 2021’s racing, was released on Netflix in the past couple of weeks, and has been eagerly anticipated, not least because this past season was a humdinger. At the time of writing, five days after it came out, viewers had already screened 28 million hours of the new series, according to Netflix, and within a week it had become one of service’s top 10 TV shows in 50 countries, including the UK and Ukraine.
