From the first time I tried the standard and excellent 12 year old early in my journey to now, I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve bought or tried from them. Each 12-Year-old edition is an undiluted celebration of the distillery's distinct unpeated Islay whisky character. Each of our days was marked by a series of chats, encounters, and characters that we’re still talking about now several weeks out from our trip. Not only are we treated to new brands and expressions, but conformity to Scotch regionality seems to be a thing of the past.

We’d recommend you try this with and without water as we personally couldn’t decide what we preferred. There are lots of spheres of life where this approach pays off: sharing the road with lunatic drivers, my mother-in-law’s cooking, or the perpetually scatter-brained friend who can never manage to make a night out even after suggesting it himself.Bunnahabhain has since been described as a lightly peated malt, with enthusiasts occasionally leaning towards the opinion that there’s no peat whatsoever. Interestingly, Bunnahabhain doesn’t seem to have released any liquid under their own brand until 1979.

Deep into the first building period in an Islay winter, two large boilers were blown off the beach while they were waiting to be fitted. It’s flavoursome, engaging and different from what you’d expect from almost any other bottle that leaves the peaty shores of Islay. I very much enjoy this whisky, and the fact that it’s essentially a non-peated Islay, it’s almost unique. Further, we reserve the right to modify, change, discontinue the Service, add or remove features, update the Service, change its appearance, temporarily and permanently, at any time, in whole or any part thereof. In 2021 Bunnahabhain distillery released a new Cask Strength version of its Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old.

I like many distilleries, but there’s only a handful with which I feel like I’m on more of a journey. Maybe I don’t want to kill this bottle off too quickly, only to feel a bit miffed at paying over the odds for a 12-year-old Scotch again. it epitomises everything that Bunnahabhain is known for: unpeated, sherried and full of intense flavour, offering big hits of roasted nuts and cinnamon spice in every dram. The 2023 feels like perhaps more second-fill sherry and a bit more ex-bourbon casks than the 2022, which felt like a significant proportion of first-fill sherry.

The expression takes inspiration from the tasting experience offered to visitors of the distillery's Warehouse 9, where they're able to taste whiskies drawn straight from the cask. You’re on the small island of Islay and, due to the use of peat as a primary fuel source, your typical flavour profile is pungent smoke and salinity from maritime, salty-sea air. By using the Service, and by creating an account you represent, warrant and confirm that you are of legal age. With the finishing touches of the sip you can just about pick out some stewed pears and cubed pineapple. The 2022 met that expectation and both the 2022 and 2023 are fabulous drams - in their own ways - showcasing different sides of the spirit, and this should be celebrated, discussed, explored, and discovered for ourselves.
